How to Upscale DVD to 1080P MP4 MKV HD Video on Windows 10 and macOS Mojave, Catalina

You may probably notice that your DVDs look great on your old TVs but when it comes to playback on HD smart TVs, it looks bad? It is now necessary to upscale DVD to 1080P MP4 MKV to better fit newer and larger screens.

I have hundreds of DVDs, including BBC TV series, Disney DVD movies for kids and workout DVDs for the family, and I want to upconvert DVD to 1080P HD video in an electronic format MP4 or MKV to save on my hard drive or play on my smart TVs through Plex or Apple TV. And I will share my experience of using software to upconvert DVD to 1080P HD video in MP4 or MKV on Windows 10, macOS Mojave as well as the latest macOS 10.15 Catalina.

The Software to Upscale DVD to 1080P on PC/Mac

I have tried ripping DVDs to 1080P MP4 in the past and had to use the Handbrake/VLC software combination, which would take hours and hours per individual movie, and at least 45 min per single 20 min TV show episode. Frankly, it drove me insane trying to do it this way and I just stopped trying altogether. I’ve recently decided to try again, and so had a look for any paid software that could do what I want but that would take minutes per movie/episode, not hours. I came across Leawo DVD Ripper, and it is exactly the software to upscale DVD to 1080P MP4 or MKV that I’m chasing, especially that it can convert DVD to 1080p HD video faster.

Leawo DVD Ripper, the very software to upconvert DVD to 1080p, works on both Windows and macOS, including the latest  Windows 10 and macOS 10.14 Mojave, and can convert DVD to HD quality videos in MP4, MKV, AVI as well as iOS and Android devices like iPhone X, iPad, Galaxy S9/S9 +. You may be wondering, that, in actual use, how quickly can I expect to rip a standard length DVD movie and upscale DVD to 1080P?  I convert DVDs to 1080P HD video in MP4 for my 65 inches UHD smart TV and it generally takes around 25-30 minutes. My computer is not powerful and it’s 7 years old. The more powerful your computer is, the faster it rips.

How to Upscale DVD to 1080p HD MP4/MKV on PC/Mac

The below guide explains how I use Leawo DVD Ripper, the very DVD to 1080p upconverting software, to upscale DVD to 1080P HD video in MP4 or MKV. The screenshots are taken on Windows 10, but the steps can also be applied to the macOS version (Mojave and Catalina included) as they look and work the same.

Step 1. Download and Install

Please follow the above download buttons to have a free trial. Instead of the stand-alone software to upconvert DVDs to 1080P HD video, what you download is called Leawo Prof. Media, the all-in-one media solution by Leawo and Leawo DVD Ripper is part of the pack. But no worry, you won’t be charged for the other functions if you don’t need them.

Step 2. Load DVD

Click DVD Ripper or the Convert tab on top and load DVD for up-scaling to 1080P via “Add Blu-ray/DVD”-“Add from CD-ROM” to load the DVD in your DVD drive. If you have DVD VIDEO_TS folders or ISO files, go for “Add from folder” or “Add iso file”.

The DVD here in the example is CARS3, and I have been using Leawo DVD Ripper to rip it to Apple TV for watching.

Step 3. Main/Full Mode

After seconds, you will see the DVD loaded with the below window for you to select titles as well as main or full or custom mode before DVD upconverting. Generally, we don’t need Full Mode. I recommend Main Mode for movie DVDs and Custom Mode for TV shows, like BBC DVD, and workout DVDs, which has more than one title except for the main one.

Step 4. HD Video Profile for 1080P DVD Up-scaling

MP4 Videos comes as the default profile or the most recently used profile is selected for the output. Click it and click Change to select another profile.

change profile

Go Format-HD Video and select HD MP4 Video. You will notice the default resolution is 1280×720, if it is OK for you to upscale DVD to 720P HD video, you can leave it. If you want to upscale DVD to 1080P, click the Edit button as shown below to set the resolution.

Set the resolution to 1920×1080 so as to convert DVD to 1080p HD video. You can also set the codec and bit rate as you like and save as your own.

Step 5. Upscale DVD to 1080P

Now we are ready for ripping DVD to 1080P MP4. If you want to rip and convert DVD to 1080P MKV, make sure to go HD format and choose HD MKV as the output! Just hit the convert button to convert DVD to HD quality!

Question, how does your DVD movie now look like on your 4K smart TV?

Another Thought on Upscaling DVD to 1080P

To be honest, general DVD ripping programs don’t give perfect results for upconverting or upscaling DVDs to 1080p. What they do is more like zoom-in and you may not get the quality as good as you imagine. However, there is another thought to upscale DVD to 1080P as recently I was invited to review the AI Image enlarger and I found it did well in enlarging the SD photos to HD photos.

So, is there a video AI enlarger? And, YES! DVDFab Enlarger AI is the first AI-powered program to upscale DVDs and SD videos up to 1080P. Not only does it increase the resolution, but the quality:

Using the Super-Resolution technology, DVDFab Enlarger AI, the world’s 1st complete, deep learning capable video upscaling solution, can enhance video from 480p (SD) to 1080p (Full HD). It enlarges the video images by 300%, and in the meantime, add in great details to improve video quality exponentially.

You can get DVDFab Enlarger AI right from its official site:

Please note:

  • To upscale DVD to 1080p by the Enlarger AI takes really long
  • Only MP4 and MKV are supported
  • The latest driver must be installed.

If you meet the requirements for GPU and don’t quite care about the time, you can give it try to upscale DVD or other lower resolution videos to 1080P MP4 or MKV.

And, it takes three steps to enhance your SD videos. Firstly, please follow the above button to download, install and launch DVDFab 11. Then, insert your DVD to your DVD drive. DVDFab will automatically load the DVD to the program. Go Ripper tab, choose MP4 or MKV as the output and finally hit Start to begin upscaling DVD to 1080P:
