How to Split DVD to Separated MP4 Files by Chapters on PC and Mac?

As far as I can see, live music concerts are organized chapter by chapter ( one song per chapter). That brings you to a position separating the entire show into single songs. I want to split DVDs by chapters, especially music DVDs, to separate MP4 files and have tried a couple of DVD rippers to rip DVD chapters into individual files but have trouble achieving this tiny target.

I did a couple of Google searches with different keywords, and Aimersoft DVD Ripper comes as featured snippets in some searches. But it has its own problems as I meet with other DVD rippers.

Problem in Splitting Chapters

Aimersoft DVD Ripper is the first I tried to rip chapters of music DVDs into single mp4 files. I follow their guide, but it rips the whole DVD into a single MP4 file WITH chapter markers without splitting. And this is the most common issue I face, and it happens to a couple of DVD rippers like Wondershare UniConverter, MakeMKV, Handbrake, etc. And I don’t have any option in the program to rip and split DVDs by chapters. But they are still good to go if you just want to rip DVDs WITH chapters. However,  I want to warn you that there has been no update for Aimersoft DVD Ripper since 2014.

Best Four DVD Chapter Splitter for PC/Mac

During my tries to rip DVD chapters into individual files, I found the below THREE programs good to go and would like to recommend them to you all.

VideoProc Converter

VideoProc Converter, although named as a converter, can rip any copy-protected DVD, VIDEO TS folder, or ISO image files and convert them to over 370 formats. Advanced users will like that VideoProc Converter gives them complete flexibility over video resolution, bitrate, frame rate, video codec, and subtitle track. VideoProc Converter rips DVDs quickly using Level 3 hardware acceleration. The software can convert 480P DVDs to HD and edit DVD movies by trimming, cropping, adding subtitles and effects, and synchronizing video and audio. With the VideoProc Converter, you can also split the DVD into chapters.

Magic DVD Ripper seems to be a little bit outdated, but it is straightforward and easy to use and does the job of ripping DVDs into individual chapters in AVI (Xvid, DivX), WMV, MP3, MPEG2, MP4 as well as iPhone iPad and smartphones and tablets. Also, the backup mode of Magic DVD Ripper is nice and serviceable for those who want to split one DVD-9 disc into two DVD-5 discs or shrink to a DVD-5. Ripping DVDs into chapters with Magic DVD Ripper is extremely easy with just two or three mouse clicks. The program is designed to rip DVDs as simply as possible. I will offer a detailed guide later.

Please note Magic DVD Ripper works on both Windows and macOS. As far as I can see, it is fully compatible with Windows 10. However, as for the mac version, the newest version is from early 2014, so I don’t quite recommend the mac version. And I assume it’s no longer working with the latest macOS. But I have not tested it yet.

AnyMP4 DVD Ripper is another DVD chapter splitter that works for me rip chapters of DVDs into single mp4 or mp3 files, which is really helpful to rip separate songs from a music DVD. AnyMP4 works on both Windows and Mac and has been tested to be fully compatible with the latest macOS Catalina as it is a 64-bit DVD Ripper

In AnyMP4, you are free to set chapters ripping as default. If not, there is just one more mouse click. You are able to use AnyMP4 DVD Ripper rip DVD chapters into individual files in various video formats like MP4, MKV, FLV, AVI, etc and audio formats like MP3, M4A, etc. Split the chapters to 3D MP4, MKV, etc are also available. Really a bonus feature.

DVDFab DVD Ripper is always giving me sunrises as it is so comprehensive and powerful to meet the different needs of different people. When it comes to DVD ripping with chapters, I found it so far to be the only one that keeps DVD chapters makers as well as split DVD by chapters into individual files. It is highly recommended as it is fully compatible with the latest Windows 10, macOS Mojave, and the latest Catalina. It supports all kinds of DVD copy protections like CSS, Region Code, and special copy protections from Disney, Panrounment, etc., meaning you can split all your DVDs by chapters with DVDFab!

Importantly, DVDFab supports various video formats for DVD ripping. You can split DVD by chapters and save them as individual MP4, AVI, MKV, MP3, AAC, etc.

How to Split DVD by Chapters to Separated MP4 MP3

I will offer guides for the three programs to split DVDs into separated MP4 or MP3 files by chapters

Split DVD Chapters with VideoProc Converter

VideoProc Converter is very easy to use, and when it comes to splitting DVDs, it will take you only a few mouse clicks. Let’s go.

Please follow the above link to download, install and launch VideoProc Converter. Put your DVD disc into your DVD drive to get ready.

Step 1. Go for DVD

Click the big DVD button on the main UI:

Step 2. Load DVD

Click the DVD Disc button and load your DVD here.

Step 3. Profile

After the DVD is loaded, choose a profile for DVD ripping. MP4 is the default.

Step 4. Split Chapter

Go for Chapters, and uncheck “Merge selected chapters to one video”.

VideoProc Converter: Split DVD Chapters

Step 5. Run

Click Run to start splitting DVD chapters with VideoProc Converter.

Magic DVD Ripper: Split DVD by Chapters

Upon the first try using Magic DVD Ripper, it merged all of the chapters into one when I converted the kid’s movie to MP4. But I found it extremely easy and much easier than other programs to rip chapters individually with Magic DVD Ripper from Magic DVD Software. If you are also wondering how to do episodes or chapters individually one at a time to keep the separate tracks or you are not sure how to use Magic DVD Ripper to separate files for each chapter, here we go.

Step 1. Getting Ready

Download Magic DVD Ripper for Windows, install and launch it. I notice the Mac version is no longer available on its official site.

Insert your DVD into your DVD drive. Magic DVD Ripper is believed to support all kinds of DVDs with protections of CSS, Region, RCE, Sony ARccOS, and PuppetLock, etc. I have ripped one called Brave and I am gonna show you how to rip the DVD Toy Story 3.

Step 2. Open DVD Ripper

Magic DVD Ripper can load DVDs in your drive automatically, so there are no steps for you to add a DVD like other DVD rippers while you will have to click the xxx button to do so. However, if there are two or more DVD drives, the program seems to load the DVD with the prior drive letter. You will then have to select manually.

Step 3. Select Split Mode

You will notice that the DVD is read and analyzed very fast with the main title being selected. It is done the moment you open the program. Just go Split Mode and select By Chapter.

Step 4. Set the destination folder

If it is your first time using this program, you will have to click Browse and set a destination folder, or you can pass this step and go to step 5.

set output folder for dvd chapters

Step 4. Start Ripping DVDs to individual chapters

Hit the Start button to start ripping. Within only three mouse clicks and about a half-hour of time, you will see your DVDs will have been ripped to chapters.

Since I am just testing to show you how to separate DVDs into chapters, I did not change the last profile I use for output, which is iPad, well, it saves me one click. : ) But if you want, go the drop-down menu to select one or click the Edit button to modify or go Profile-Profile Editor to create your own.

DVDFab: Rip DVD into individual chapters

Using DVDFab to split DVD by chapters is easy, and it supports ripping chapters into individual MP4, MP3, etc. Also, it is only to keep the chapter makers without splitting. As far as I can see, it seems to be the only program that does the splitting and the keeping.  What’s more, it is fully compatible with Windows 10, macOS Big Sur, and the M1 Silicon MACs. And, what’s why it is my first and top recommendation. All right, there’s a how-to guide.

Please follow the below button to free download DVDFab DVD Ripper, install, and launch it to get ready.

Step 1. Load DVD

DVDFab automatically loads DVD in the DVD drive for you. If you have two or more DVDs on different DVD drives, DVDFab will load them all, but feel free to disable one for ripping as you prefer. If you want to split ISO or DVD folder by chapters, no problem here with DVDFab. Just drag and drop them into the program.

Step 2. Profile for Ripping

MP4 or your last used profile is the default for ripping DVD by chapters. To change to any others you prefer, click the MP4 video and choose the one you like.

DVDFab Profiles

Go Audio tab, if you want to split DVD by chapters into individual MP3, AAC, AC3, FLAC, etc.

Step 3. Split DVD by Chapters

In order to split DVD by chapters to MP4 MP3 or other video or audio formats, we will have to go for the Advanced Settings and set the Split mode to “Split by Chapters”:

Step 4. Start Ripping

Hit the start button as we are all ready for DVD splitting by chapters.

AnyMP4 DVD Ripper: Rip DVD into Chapters

Update: I am sorry to say, but AnyMP4 version 8 no longer supports splitting. You can try the previous version 7.

In my previous post “Convert DVD to MP3 M4A FLAC“, I also recommend AnyMP4 as its “Only convert Chapters” mode impresses me and is the very function I need for ripping chapters of DVDs into single files, including MP4 and MP3. And you can follow this quick guide below to see how easy you can handle this.

Step 1. Download and Install

Follow the above link to download and install your very tool to split DVDs by chapters.

Step 2. Load DVD

Click the Load Disc button or its drop-down menu to load a DVD disk, a folder or an ISO file. Choose DVD Navigator Mode as it recommends.

Step 3. Detect the Right Title

AnyDVD lists possible titles as well as the bonus features. I just don’t want those, I only want to rip the main movie to chapters. You are able to use the built-in preview to see if the first one or two is the right/main title or check the below free guide.

Step 4. Specify Output

AnyMP4 is able to split every DVD chapters to all video and audio formats it supports. So, just use the one you need. MP4? Good! MP3? No problem.

Step 5. Ripping[Important]

We are now almost ready for the whole job of ripping DVD chapters. Just hit Run and MAKE SURE to select “Only converter Chapters”.

If the above window does not appear, go for Preferences-DVD to see if you have disable it:

I want to rip an instruction DVD. I want to play it on my iPad using an app that slows the video down. Easier to learn. The DVD contains 10 songs and each song is divided in several sections called measures. I think these measures are chapters. Total time 2:29:52. I tried WinXDVD but it only creates a file of 9 minutes. That is one chapter. I think the DVD has 30 chapters. I don’t see the chapters in WinXDVD. I then follow your suggestions and it works and I’m okay if I can rip every chapter as a single video so I have 30 individual video’s. But do you have a suggestion to rip those kind of instruction DVDs to MP4 and keep the chapters to switch between each other? Or am I doing something wrong? Besides, I only tried AnyMp4 as you don’t seem to recommend MagicDVD for macOS.

Wondershave Video Converter did convert DVDs with the chapters that can be switched. But it failed to work with my protected DVDs? Failed to load 3 out of 7.
