How do I remove Blu-ray region code from a Blu-ray disc on PC and Mac?

Recently, I was invited to answer the question “How do I remove Blu-ray region code from a Blu-ray disc?” on Quora. Similar to DVDs, Blu-ray disc also has region coding, but there are just three regions for Blu-ray. However, as for the question, to be honest, it is NOT possible to do so since the Blu-ray disc is read-only.

But I do think there are workarounds somehow to remove Blu-ray region code from a protected Blu-ray disc, and I already had an answer on Quora. In the post, I’d like to expand the topic and offer more possible ways to enjoy region-free Blu-ray on PC and Mac.

Workaround 1: Make a Backup

When I say make a backup, I mean copy Blu-ray to another Blu-ray disc or save it as an ISO file or folder on the hard drive. When copying, the Blu-ray region code will be removed, and the copy is region-free for any Blu-ray player or media player. And there are two programs that I’d like to recommend for you to back up Blu-ray to remove the Blu-ray region code.

Leawo Blu-ray Copy is a function module of Leawo Prof. Media, Leawo’s all-in-one solution for Bluray DVDs and videos. Unlike DVDFab, there is no option in Leawo to remove Blu-ray region code, but no worry, it automatically does so! You can remove the Blu-ray region code to a new Blu-ray disc, an ISO file, or a Blu-ray folder with Leawo.

And it is super easy for Leawo Blu-ray Copy to make a backup with the Blu-ray region removed with just four mouse clicks. Go Copy tab and load Blu-ray via Add from Blu-ray/DVD, confirm the Blu-ray region, choose Full or Main Movie mode, and hit Copy to do so.

Leawo Copy Bluray Quick Guide

With DVDFab, you are able to make a 1:1 Blu-ray backup to another Blu-ray disc, and you can also merge or compress a Blu-ray disc. And to ensure you remove the Blu-ray region code, go for Common Settings here and make sure Remove RC is checked in Blu-ray–Blu-ray Protection.

To copy a Blu-ray to another Blu-ray, make sure the Blu-ray drive is selected as the output. To make an ISO of region-code removed Blu-ray, save it as ISO here:

In one of my previous posts, I recommended DVDFab for merging DVDs as it is super powerful to merge DVDs and DVD titles with DVD regions removed. When it comes to Blu-ray, DVDFab Blu-ray Copy is also able to make a region-free Blu-ray copy. Besides, DVDFab also supports 4K Blu-ray ripping. Isn’t it amazing?

Workaround 2: Rip Blu-ray to MP4 MKV for Playback on Any Media Player

With workaround 2, there are more choices for you to rip Blu-ray to MP4, MKV, AVI, etc., for playback on any media players like VLC, IINA, Plex, etc., as the Blu-ray region code no longer protects those videos. And there are my choices:

MakeMKV is free while in beta, removing the Blu-ray region code and saving your Blu-ray directly to MKV without re-encoding. Superfast!

You are able to get a free beta key here every two months, and if you find MakeMKV is your very solution for removing Blu-ray region code for you. You can support it here:

Like Leawo Blu-ray Copy, its Blu-ray Ripper is also a functional module of Leawo Prof. Media. It removes the Blu-ray copy protections including the region code and saves the Blu-ray movie to MP4, AVI, MKV, MOV, etc for playback on any media players. Besides, it also supports DVDs.

AnyMP4 Blu-ray Ripper is also one of the most commonly used Blu-ray ripping solution by me and I am very satisfied with its 3D options.

I believe it is the true 3D Blu-ray ripper because it recognizes the 3D movie and is able to remove 3D Blu-ray region code and save the 3D Bluray as a true 3D MP4 or 3D MKV file.

AnyMP4 3D Options

I actually recommend it prior to MakeMKV and others because of its passthrough profiles to save Blu-ray to MKV or MP4 without re-encoding. This way, it is super fast to remove the Blu-ray region protection as well as other protections, and the video and audio quality is 1:1. The passthrough profiles are available here:

DVDFab is my favorite Blu-ray decrypter to remove Blu-ray region code, and it supports all other Blu-ray copy protections. With DVDFab, you can even export the Blu-ray subtitle to SRT.

Workaround 3: Play Blu-ray with Region Free Blu-ray Player

Actually, if you don’t want to speed time to rip or backup Blu-ray discs to remove the region code protection, you are also able to play Blu-ray on your PC or Mac with a region free Blu-ray player.

And, there are the truly region free Blu-ray players for you:

I already have a review for Leawo Bluray Player since it is totally free for PC and Mac users. You can check it for more details here.

DVDFab Player 5 is so far the most powerful player for Blu-ray discs. There are two versions of the player, the Standard and the Ultra. To be able to play 4K ultra and 3D Blu-ray discs, you will have to go for the Ultra version, while the standard works for most normal Blu-ray discs.

AnyMP4 Blu-ray Player is a new Blu-ray player for me even I use its Blu-ray Ripper for quite some time. To my surprise, it is working really well for protected Blu-ray.

So I want to watch an old movie (1990s) that was never released in my region on blu ray (it was released in the 90s on DVD here in the US, but never re-released). I’m quite happy to pay for the movie, it just doesn’t seem to be an option. Since I have a decent home theater, I am loathe to watch it in standard definition, when it was released elsewhere in HD. My tv appears to accept media vs SD card and USB thumb drive. Would simply ripping an ISO to a usb thumb drive, be a solution to my problem?. (Just looking to confirm that it is a fairly straight forward process before I drop $30 on an Australian Blueray…) Or would trying to stream it with a VPN make more sense? (sorry, this is not a problem I am accustomed to dealing with… But dammit I want to watch this movie!)
