How to rip Bluray or DVD to MP4/MKV HEVC X265 10 Bit/12 Bit

Update:

DVDFab now supports 12 bit as well, meaning you are able to rip Bluray or DVD to MP4 MKV 10 bit and 12 bit! You can learn how to do so with this guide as well. It works just the same.

I am a regular DVD ripping user and have recently started to rip all of my 1000 plus DVDs again to standardize the format and improve the quality. I am finding that I was constantly having to do the same tasks with each disc with some of the DVD rippers and I was wondering if there is a way to set defaults somewhere? And, 10 bit and 12-bit videos are more and more popular.  How can we rip and convert Blu-ray DVD to 10 bit, even 12 bit?

Blu-ray DVD Ripper That Meets My Needs

The things I want to set as defaults are:

  • The output format. I only want to rip Blu-ray DVDs to MP4 and it’s the same for every rip so why do I need to select it again and again. I should be able to change it if I want but shouldn’t have to select it for each disc.
  • I don’t want the title number at the end of each file name. Some softwares do a good job of naming the output file with the movie name but why would anyone want the track name appended.
  • I want forced subtitles for every disc if possible.
  • I want to rip Blu-ray DVD to a 10 bit or 12 bit MP4 MKV for my 4K smart TV.

And I am glad to say that DVDFab Blu-ray or DVD Ripper is the very DVD ripping solution that meets my needs.

This is the guide of using DVDFab Blu-ray or DVD Ripper to always rip Blu-ray and DVDs to MP4 with forced subtitles and custom your own output file name. Once you have done the settings, you don’t have to go for the same tasks for every Blu-ray DVD ripping.

As far as I can see, Bluray and DVDs are only 8-bit, is it better to rip and encode Bluray DVD to 10-bit or even 12 bit? If yes, how we can rip Bluray DVD to MP4 MKV etc 10-bit H264 or H265 HEVC? DVDFab is right here to help!

10-bit VS 8-bit

8-bit and 10-bit, here we mean the bit depth of color, aka, the number of colors you can see:

  • 8-bit color = 2^8×3 = 2^24 = 16.7 million colors
  • 10-bit color = 2^10×3 = 2^30 = 1 billion colors

And, you can see the difference here. And 12-bit videos look more impressive.

From the above image, I am sure you’d like to rip and encode Bluray or DVD to 10 bit or even 12-bit. However, I suggest your doing so only when your monitors, smart TVs or phone screens, or other display device supports 10-bit or 12-bit color depth. If yes, there is how I rip Bluray DVD to 10-bit AND 12-bit MP4 MKV M2TS H264 or H265. 4K and 3D formats are also available.

Let’s get started.

Step 1. Download

You can follow the below button to download and install the 10 bit and 12 bit Bluray DVD Ripper-DVDFab. It is available for both PC and Mac. Importantly, DVDFab is fully compatible with M1 chip MacBook Air, Macbook Pro, and Mac Mini running Big Sur!

Please note DVDFab is an all-in-one solution for Bluray and DVD ripping, copying and creating, video converting and DRM removing, etc. You will have to activate the Bluray or DVD Ripper separately for different ripping.

Step 2. Load Bluray DVD

DVDFab automatically loads your Bluray or DVD disc in your BD DVD drive. You are also able to click the + button or drag and drop the Bluray DVD disc, ISO, or Bluray or DVD VIDEO_TS folder to the program for loading. You will be presented to choose the Bluray or DVD region as requested:

If you don’t want to choose a region code every time when it is loading Blu-ray or DVDs, just disable it. Also, you can remove the Blu-ray region code.

Step 3. 10-bit and 12-bit profiles for Bluray DVD Ripping

Mp4 or your last used profile is the default for ripping. You are able to locate the 10-bit profiles for Bluray DVD ripping. Check the 10bit or 12bit filter so you are able to locate your desired profiles faster. MP4, MKV, and M2TS are available for Bluray DVD 10-bit ripping. And 3D and 4K are available as well. [The screenshot here is not updated yet. You will see the 12bit profiles in the latest version.]
