If you have an iPhone or iPad with iOS 4 or later, you can easily transfer files from your phone to your computer or vice versa. This can be useful if you have created and saved data on your device and you want to transfer those over to your computer for further use.

How to Transfer Files Between Your iPhone/iPad and Your PC

The following are the steps you want to take:

  • Connect your iPhone/iPad to your computer using your USB cord.
  • Open the iTunes app on your computer. You want to make sure that you have the most recent version and Trust the computer on your iPhone/iPad.
  • Near the top left of the iTunes window, click on the Device button.

  • Click file sharing.
  • On the left, you will see a list. From this list, select the app that you want to transfer the file to or from. If you are unsure of which apps are supported, check the documentation for your apps.

  • Next, you will choose how you want to proceed:

Transfer a file from your iPhone to your computer: Select the data that you wish to transfer. You will find this in the list on the right. Next, click “Save…”:

And select where you want to save the file to in the pop-up window. Finally, click Select Folder and iTunes will transfer your file to your PC in the selected folder.

Transfer a file from your computer to your iPhone: Click on “Add File…,” select the file you want to transfer. Then click Open in the pop-up window.

The file is then transferred to either your computer in the location you selected or to your iPhone. 

If the file was transferred to your iPhone, you can open it with the app that you chose during the transfer.

When transferring files between your iPhone and computer, you have the option to transfer many types of files including pictures, videos, songs and much more.

Transfer Files Through Apple’s iCloud

If connecting via USB seems to be a bit time consuming for you, you can also transfer files through Apple’s iCloud.

  • Make sure that your phone is running the latest version of iOS. If you are unsure, you can check this by going to your settings menu. Tap on general and then Software Update.
  • On your iPhone, turn on iCloud. It is likely that the setup assistant walked you through this when you updated your phone. However, if you skipped that step, you simply click on Settings and then iCloud. You will be asked to enter your Apple ID.
  • Next, click on Settings, and then iTunes & App Store. From there you want to enable automatic downloads.

  • From Apple’s website, you are going to download iCloud for Windows on to your PC:
  • Next, open iCloud and sign in with your Apple ID.
  • Finally, you can click on any of the iCloud services that you would like to enable. Make sure you click enable after each one. iCloud will automatically create these folders in Windows Explorer for you. Whenever you save files to those particular folders, the same files will appear on your iPhone. This also applies when saving them to your iPhone. They will show up on your PC.

Apple has made iPhone very versatile and user-friendly when it comes to things such as saving files and file sharing as well. As long as you have your system updated, the steps are straightforward to walk through.
