Lists of the best DVD Audio Extractor to Convert DVD to MP3 M4A FLAC on PC and Mac

I used to rip and convert DVD to MP3 or MP4 for iTunes and enjoy them on my iPhone. I recently sold the old car and move to a new Focus and notice it supports Apple CarPlay. Well, now it is easier to enjoy music, concert DVDs and even drama DVDs I ripped to MP4 or MP3 while I am driving!

I am trying to extract music audio files from a bonus DVD that came with a CD purchase. I want to make a copy of this DVD, save it to my MacBook Pro or Windows 10 laptop in MP3 (MP4 is also OK) so I can listen or watch the songs with the new CarPlay function. I also want to watch on the computer using QuickTime Player and I want to be able to skip a song or choose which song I want to go to. But I have trouble ripping DVD to MP3 or M4A.

I have Xilisoft DVD Ripper configured for AAC output (Apple M4A for iTunes compatibility) with a sample rate of 48000 and a bit rate of 256 Kbps.  I’m not quite interested in video, just the audio as these are bonus audio tracks on a DVD.  When I click Run, it extracts the track(s) and opens the output folder in Finder with the m4a file(s) listed.  However, when I try to add them to my iTunes library nothing happens.  When I double-click one of the extracted m4a files in the output folder, iTunes is raised forward and then nothing happens.  I also tried ripping the bonus music DVD to MP3 and the output is noisy and totally out of sync.

So, I tried some other DVD audio extractors on both Windows and macOS and here I’d like to recommend some top music and concert DVD rippers that works for me so you can also use to rip and convert DVD to MP3 for CarPlay.

DVDFab is an all-in-one media solution for you to rip, convert, copy and burn Blu-ray, DVD, MKV, AVI, etc. It is one of the best DVD audio extractors for both PC and Mac.

It is able to rip and convert DVD to MP3, AAC, AC3, DTS, EAC3, FLAC, APE, M4A, etc.

With DVDFab, you can convert DVD to MP3 and split DVD by chapters. This is very helpful in music and concert DVD ripping as each chapter is an individual song. Split by Chapter is hidden here in Advanced Settings:

Besides, when it comes to Blu-ray ripping, you can even rip Blu-ray to HiFi audio

Magic DVD Ripper is a Windows and Mac based DVD ripping solution that is able to rip and convert all DVDs for you, including those music or concert DVDs, to music only audio files like MP3, AAC, FLAC or video formats like MP4, MKV, or devices like iPhone and iPad.

When converting music DVDs to audio MP3 files, it is highly recommended you guys to go Split mode and enable splitting By Chapter. For a couple of music and concert DVDs that I have tried like Essential Eighties, The Last Waltz (MGM), Monterey Pop (Criterion), A Hard Day’s Night (Miramax), Woodstock: Three Days of Peace and Music (Warner Home Video), Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (Paramount), Dig! (Palm Pictures/UMVD), Welcome To My Nightmare and so on, a chapter in the main title refers to a song.

Magic DVD Ripper is able to rip and extract movies DVDs to music MP3 or video MP4 as well. It is just a pity their mac version is no longer updated since 2014.

Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate, although named “video converter”, works as a DVD audio extractor on both Windows and Mac computers and is able to rip DVDs to MP3 or MP4 for CarPlay.

Before you rip and convert music and convert or even drama DVDs to MP3/AAC/M4A or MP4/M4V for CarPlay, go to Preference and make sure “Keep Chapter Marker” is checked. However, it seems this only works for ripping DVDs to video formats like MP4 or devices for Apple, etc. If you don’t care about the music switching and want to license the songs on CarPlay all the way to the end, this won’t be big trouble.

Besides, it is possible that a song in a music or concert DVD corresponds a title. If so, make sure you select All Movies when loading the music DVD.

Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate is also an all-in-one video converter, YouTube and another online video downloader, DVD burner. So, with Wondershare, you are even able to download and convert YouTube videos to MP4 or MP3 for CarPlay as well! That is awesome.

Leawo DVD Ripper, as a component of Leawo’ Prof. Media, works on both Windows and macOS and is able to rip and convert a variety of DVDs, either protected or home-made, to MP4, M4V, MKV, AVI, M2TS, FLV, MP3, M4A, or Apple TV, Samsung/TCL smart TVs, etc.

While ripping music DVDs to MP3 for CarPlay, Leawo always asks you to choose the Full Movie, Main Movie or Custom Mode before ripping. As far as I can see, almost music DVDs store songs in the main title and keep individual songs in chapters, so the Main Movie mode is recommended. Also, a few music or concert DVDs store songs in different titles, thus, you will have to choose Custom Mode so you won’t lose a song on the DVD.

Leawo DVD Ripper don’t support chapters, but you can to Edit and trim or split the needed song for you.

Other Leawo Products Recommendation

  • Leawo Prof Media: Actually all programs you download from Leawo is Leawo Prof. Media and Leawo DVD Ripper is an element of it. It combines all Leawo programs and is able to rip, convert, copy and burn Blurays and DVDs, convert all videos, download online videos. If you need all those functions, it is recommended.
  • Leawo Bluray Ripper: A constituent part of the Prof Media as well. Works for Blurays and DVDs ripping. If you also want to rip Blurays to MP3 or MP4/M4V for CarPlay, it is recommended.
  • Leawo Video Converter Ultimate: A constituent part of the Prof Media, works for music Blurays and DVDs ripping for CarPlay, burn Bluray and DVD and videos, download long YouTube videos and playlist as well. Somewhat like an alternative to Wondershare UniConverter.

WonderFox soft offers a music DVD ripper and DVD audio extractor named WonderFox DVD Ripper Pro for Windows as well as an all-in-all DVD Ripper, Video Converter, YouTube Downloader named WonderFox DVD Video Converter. Both work for music DVDs as well as normal movie DVDs or documentary DVDs etc.

Unlike Wondershare and Leawo, Wonderfox DVD Ripper Pro lists all DVD titles with the main title checked by default. I like the Wonderfox style because it looks direct and simple while Leawo and Wondershare look disordered as they display previews for each title when a Full Title or Full Movie mode is selected.

Wonderfox DVD Ripper Platinum supports ripping and converting music DVDs to music MP3, AAC, and AC3/DTS for CarPlay. You will have to go the Audio tab for the music profiles and please note the profile Apple Devices are all videos except iPod Shuffle, which is M4A. To me, Wondershare is the fastest way to convert DVD to MP3.

AnyMP4 DVD Ripper works on both Windows and macOS for you to rip and convert DVDs to MP3. It supports up to 14 audio formats including FLAC, WAV, WMA, AAC, ALAC, AC3, AIFF, AMR, AU, MP3, MP2, M4A, MKA, OGG, so you are not only able to rip your music DVDs to MP3 M4A for CarPlay, but also many others for different use.

Although this music DVD ripper does not support maintaining the chapter makers in MP4 video for CarPlay, it is able to split music DVD to Mp4 or Mp3 for CarPlay by chapters. Just make sure you choose “Only Convert Chapters” after you click Concert.

anymp4 concert only chapters for music dvd

If you don’t find this option, go Preference-DVD-Conversion Settings and enable “Show conversion settings selection before conversion” or just make “Only Convert Chapters” as your default.

I’d like to recommend AnyMP4 for macOS users as it is able to split music DVDs by chapters into individual Mp3 files. However please note it does not preserve chapters for video formats and you will have to select the right title for ripping when it comes to encrypted DVDs. For music DVDs that divides each song to different titles, AnyMp4 saves your time to select all titles.

Summary

I essentially want a music DVD ripper to convert my DVD music videos into mp3 so I could listen to them on my iPhone as well as on the car via CarPlay. During the tests, I found DVDFab, Magic DVD Ripper, and AnyMP4 DVD Ripper are the only three that split music DVD to MP3 into chapters, which as far as I know are the individual songs for most music DVDs, while other DVD rippers convert the whole music DVD as a single audio track.

DVDFab and Magic DVD Ripper work better than AnyMP4 DVD Ripper, especially in encrypted DVDs. DVDFab and MagicDVD always locate the right DVD title for you while AnyMp4 defaults to select all. I know this is NOT right for encrypted DVDs as there are up to 99 titles in DVDs from Disney etc, which are all especially copy protected. But it is OK for TV series or music DVDs that divide each song into a title.

So, if you are on Windows and want to rip and split music DVDs to Mp3 into chapters for each song, DVDFab and Magic DVD Ripper are your top choice. And AnyMP4 comes second for those who own a Mac machine and want to split as well.

If you want to rip music DVDs to MP4 with chapter markers on PC and macOS, Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate and DVDFab are your top choice. For other DVD rippers from Leawo, WonderFox, they support chapters in neither MP3 nor MP4, but they are also working and worth a try.
